Portugal : Casa de Mateus

The Casa de Mateus, located in Vila Real, Portugal, is a premier 18th-century Baroque architectural masterpiece completed in 1744. It is renowned for its stunning, ornate façade, designed by Nicolau Nasoni, and surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens, a famous cedar tunnel, and vineyards.

The home and grounds are spectacular and were in early spring bloom during our visit. While there, Carroll Lane led us in a mindfulness exercise in the quiet gardens and we each took some space to journal for a bit before enjoying a little Mateus Rosé tasting. Following our quieter morning, we toured the home and gardens taking in the library, chapel of Our Lady of Pleasures, and rooms containing furniture, art & tapestries from the 17th to 20th centuries.

The iconic, globally known "Mateus Rosé" (launched in 1942 by Sogrape) was named after the house and features its image on the label. While this Rosé isn’t produced in the estates vinyards, it is still what helped put the historic property front and center for travelers.

When you travel,
A new silence
Goes with you.
And if you listen,
You might hear
What your heart would
Love to say.
{John O’Donohue)
