Portugal : Folk ArtWorkshop
Our afternoon excursion to the outskirts of Evora opened our eyes to the beauty and history of traditional Portuguese toile painting in the Alentejo region. Most often found on furniture, the pieces are characterized by decorative motifs that often feature stylized flowers, petals, and intricate vines. Common items include chairs with straw or rush seats, wardrobes, chests or arks, writing desks, mirrors, and small bedside tables.
Culturally, these pieces reflect everyday life, as they were historically made for daily use with designs that expressed family identity and regional aesthetics. Frequently found in rural homes and guesthouses, this furniture helps create the warm, rustic atmosphere that is distinctive of the Alentejo region.
We loved learning from a local artisan about her heritage and craft! She then gave instructions so we could make our own chargers. When we stretch ourselves to try new things, there are lots of invitations and happy accidents along the way, right??!!
